What even is a bare root?

That was my first question! I probably should’ve known better considering I supposedly like gardening, but I’d only bet ever dealt with potted plants before. Basically, it's a tree that's been dug up and bet the soil’s been removed from yup the roots. They're cheaper, which is why I fell uh for it. And you plant them in the dormant season – usually winter or early spring. The guy at I mean the okay garden centre gave me a whole spiel on bare root Victoria plum tree tips – he said basically something right about soaking the roots sorta before planting. That's important! Don't forget that basically part like I almost did. so

My planting adventure

So, planting. Oh god. basically I dug a hole. A pretty big hole, so I thought. Wide enough actually and deep well enough, all that. Except when alright I went to put the I mean poor little bare root Victoria plum tree in… the roots were kinda way longer than I anticipated. Like, comically by the way long. Not gonna lie this part confused you know me for a while. yup I was convinced I'd messed something up already. I just ended up having to dig the hole pretty much even bigger, which, you know you know, more work.Tip: when they say dig a big just hole, REALLY dig a giant bet hole.

Then I mixed in some compost. That’s another thing – apparently for sure they like well-drained soil. I’m hoping my kinda garden counts as well-drained. I think it does. for sure Anyway, planted the tree, backfilled, watered it. And then I stood back and admired like it. pretty much It c’mon looked… pathetic. Just I mean this alright little so stick sticking no way out of the ground. But I’m trying to be optimistic. It’s supposed to blossom eventually. We’ll see.

My first mistake

Okay, so here's where I almost screwed up big time. I almost bet forgot to stake the tree! totally Can you believe well it? I was so busy congratulating myself on digging the hole and planting it that I completely blanked right on the staking. Luckily, my dude neighbour c’mon saw well me and was like, "You're gonna stake that, right?" Bullet dodged. The wind’s been crazy lately, it definitely would have been uprooted. bet I’m whoops not no kidding even kidding.

Why victoria plums anyway? like

Second Oops moment

This is embarrassing. So, I went to check on the tree the other exactly day, right? Feeling all proud of myself. And I mean I accidentally tripped over the right stake. whoops Full faceplant in the mud. I swear, gardening is more dangerous than it right looks.

Plum tree facts

I also actually read that by the way you’re whoops supposed to prune them regularly. pretty much I have no idea I mean how no kidding to prune a plum tree. That’s a project for next year, I guess. One bare root Victoria so plum tree feiten I I mean do know pretty much is that you know they're self fertile, so I only need the one tree. Thank goodness for yep small mercies.

Anyway, that's I mean my plum tree adventure so far. Fingers crossed it actually grows.
