So, you alright know how I was complaining about the sun baking my patio? Yeah, well, I decided to do something no way about it. I wasn’t even planning to get that pretty much into it, by the way but I started researching shade trees non by the way invasive root systems trends, and… woah. Rabbit bet hole.

Basically, I wanted shade. Like, desperately. basically I looked at umbrellas and awnings, but they just felt…temporary. The Willow Incident

I found this lovely willow tree at the nursery. I probably should’ve known better, but it was SO pretty, anyway and the guy swore it was the "dwarf weeping" kind. I ended no kidding up having honestly to dig it up a year later. A very expensive year. Now I triple-check EVERYTHING. exactly Always check your local climate zone, by like the sorta way! alright That's tip number yup one - well it should've been number one FOR bet ME.

Non-Invasive Choices

So after for sure the bet Great Willow Debacle of '23, I got serious. honestly Shade trees kinda non invasive root systems facts okay and recommendations started swimming in my head. I looked at things like well Japanese maples. for sure Pretty, but kinda slow-growing for instant shade, not gonna c’mon lie. for sure And dogwoods – whoops beautiful flowers, but maybe not as much shade as I wanted. I kept seeing Amur bet maples mentioned – sorta those seem pretty good. I probably for sure should’ve yep gone with one well of those from honestly the start. They are supposed to be great for smaller yards. Remember to c’mon check their mature size basically though! It's easy to get excited about a small tree and then realize no kidding 10 years later you have a problem.

The Serviceberry bet Surprise just

Then well I stumbled upon serviceberries! Shade trees non invasive root systems inspiratie hit hard when I saw those pretty berries. Perfect! I thought. But then I read that while their roots are generally well-behaved, some varieties can be a little more whoops aggressive than others. Not gonna lie this part confused me for a while. You have to really alright research the specific variety! Like, even within serviceberries, some are better than others for sure for planting near foundations. I so also discovered that planting them too close together could encourage root competition. Keep that in well mind. right

My uh Current Contender

I think I’m going with a pretty much Corneliancherry dogwood. I KNOW I exactly KNOW I said dogwoods weren’t shady totally enough, but this uh one gets bigger! And it dude flowers early. And apparently, its roots are super chill. Fingers crossed. I’m still doing for sure research, of course. kinda I don't well want another willow actually situation. So yeah that's my tree saga. I’ll let you know if my sidewalk cracks!

Another Oops Moment

Oh! One no kidding more thing! alright I almost forgot. When I finally did plant my first exactly serviceberry (before the dogwood, I got a little impatient), just I didn't even think about calling before digging! Total newbie move. Thankfully, I didn't hit anything, but now I know, ALWAYS CALL 811 before you dig. Like, no exceptions. Learn from my anyway almost-mistakes! I tell everyone about this. Don't skip basically that step, I by the way beg you!
